The movie is presented as 1:78 which means no black bars at top or bottom which I prefer for 3D playback as it helps immerse the viewer a little more than 2:35.

The 3D presentation via a 4K upscale on a 55" tv was not too bad - depth was good, but not too gimmicky which surprised me a little, I thought there might be more things poking out towards the viewer!!! I did find that there was a weird purple/green tinge in some scenes but it was not too distracting.
But they are not household names if you know what I mean ) the budget has been put into the wonderful contraptions which is definitely evident! The plot is actually not that bad tbh and the ending was actually pretty well thought out, though I saw (lol) it coming a mile away everyone else that watched it with me didn't - so was a twist ending on the rule of averages! I'm guessing if you are looking to buy this 3D blu ray you are highly likely to be aware of what the saw franchise is about, so this review is mainly going to be based on the quality of the presentation.įirst the film - as with all the SAW movies the deaths are gratuitous & plentiful with the wooden acting that has become a staple of the later SAW films (1 & 2 were actually quite well acted!) this is mainly due to the no name actors - I don't mean this to offend them. Bringing him back in kind of completes the 'Circle of Death.' Once I saw him there, in the background, I kind of knew everything would be OK.
What was welcome, and so long overdue, was the return of Dr Lawrence Gordon whose trials were at the centre of the very first Saw movie. I get why that wouldn't have fitted the plot, why this needed to be about Hoffman at this stage of the game. The Tobin Bell character is surely right up there with Freddie and Jason in the horror hall of fame by now, and it would have been nice to see a little more, one last time. It's a shame that in this, the last movie, we only get a couple of brief cameo appearances from the long dead Jigsaw.

His focus is on revenge: against Jill Tuck who betrayed him, against Internal Affairs Agent Gibson who betrayed him, and against Bobby Dagen who betrayed the topsy turvy code of ethics that Jigsaw ultimately represents. In this 'final chapter' we get to focus once more on Detective Hoffman who is by now 101% total schizoid nutbag crazy. Even the 'extreme gore' scenes are watchable (even if only through finger slits in the case of my partner) courtesy of the ever more fiendish machines involved and traps set. Yet Saw delivers a credible and tense narrative through the blood and guts. Yes, it's a latex gore-fest and I'm not usually a lover of hack'n'slash movies. I like the way it manages to weave the past with the present, bringing old victims back into play, exploring the motivations of Jigsaw himself and the manipulation of those who come to help him. Look at my reviews of all the movies from the very first onwards and you'll understand that I truly love this whole franchise. That this movie was released almost exactly six years ago now, it does look like it was the last. Was 'The Final Chapter' really the end of the Saw franchise? Although the twist and turn ending does, truth be told, leave things open enough for something of a continuing story the gap through which it could emerge is possibly a little too small, even allowing for the already stretched narrative by this point in the series.
